The Story

In the remaining light in a dim room, an actress masquerades herself with gears, hairsprings and escape wheels. She is actually an audience, and with the disguise she has transmuted into a giant opera mask in the murky air. In silence her mouth opens and closes, and as she performs, the gifted singer whose skeleton has been buried long ago in a weedy wasteland seems to sing in a dreamy ambiance again.

Interactive Process and Concepts of Creation

When a spectator stretches his or her head to the opening of the interactive device, a giant mask made up of machines will emerge to imitate the facial expressions of the spectator-- opening and closing the mouth, raising the eyebrows or swinging the face. When the spectator opens his or her mouth, the mask begins to sing a Peking Opera tune. In this closed theater for one spectator, he or she sees himself or herself perform a vocal solo.

An actress sings the joy and sorrow, reunion and separation of life on the stage, and the audience is deeply infatuated. Imagine someone entering a theater and surprisingly realizing that the performer who is acting so hard with all of his or her limbs on the stage is actually the audience himself or herself!

This project attempts to catch the mood change when an audience changes its role into that of a performer - the confusion we would feel when we suddenly find that we are watched instead of watching.
