"The Eye and I" had its global premiere at the Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) on November 3, 2023, showcasing the collaborative masterpiece by artists Huang Hsin-Chien and the avant-garde French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre.
Addressing the omnipresence of surveillance in modern society, where personal expressions and actions are tracked through phones and the internet, "The Eye and I" invites audiences into a panoramic prison-like setting created through immersive VR spaces. Within these twelve different thematic cells, viewers witness historical moments linked to "surveillance" and tangibly experience the all-encompassing nature of surveillance in various domains. This immersive journey encourages contemplation and the transcendence of the constraints imposed by "surveillance." Jean-Michel's electronic music serves as a guiding force for viewers while they immerse themselves in each cell, prompting deeper contemplation and reflection on the correlation between surveillance and being surveilled.
During the ten-day festival, both artists engaged in collaborative discussions on the presentation, fostering prospects for future collaborations. The exhibition received positive feedback and resonated with several international curators. Moreover, the work garnered attention from local media, specifically Radio Zones 93.8 FM, where director Jean Musy conducted an interview, underscoring the impact and significance of the exhibition on an international level.
Furthermore, in support of "The Eye and I," the Bureau de Genève, Délégation Culturelle et Economique de Taipei collaborated with the event organizers to set up a dedicated "Eye of Taiwan at Geneva International Film Festival (GIFF) Digital Night" area within the thematic event "Digital Night." Through contextual setups, sound effects, and on-site guidance, attendees gained deeper insights into the context of the artwork.
